What is high school diploma?
Matura certificate (matura diploma) is known under numerous other names such as baccalaureate diploma (baccalaureate certificate), high school graduation diploma, or higher school certificate. This document confirms that a student passed his/her matura examinations, that is secondary school final examinations. It is not obligatory to take matura. Poland is, however, one of many countries where baccalaureate diplomaopens the door to university education. Baccalaureate diplomais awarded to a student who decided to take secondary school final examinations and obtained positive results in all obligatory subjects.
How does baccalaureate diploma look like?
For a document as strictly defined by law as baccalaureate diploma, a specimen is specifically established. It must contain: results obtained in written and oral part of secondary school final examinations in particular subjects, personal data of a student, issuance date and baccalaureate diploma number, and a stamp of the Head of the Regional Examination Board. Such an official document is subject to legal guidelines when it comes to its translation.

Translation of baccalaureate diploma? Only certified!
Due to official nature of baccalaureate diploma, a certified (sworn) translation is the only accepted form of its foreign language version. Foreign universities ask candidates to confirm their secondary education, which in practice means delivery of a translated baccalaureate diploma. Translation of a baccalaureate diploma made by oneself or by a non-certified translator will not be accepted by foreign universities. Therefore, it is worth ordering a certified translation made by a sworn translator straight away, if you want to avoid being asked by a university to supplement your application documents.
Is Polish matura recognised in the USA?
Passing matura is not necessary to start your studies in England. All you have to do is to attach an English version of your Polish baccalaureate diploma to your application documents. However, if you consider studies in the USA, Polish matura is not sufficient. American examination system does not recognise Polish baccalaureate diploma. To apply for admission to a university in the United States, candidates must demonstrate high level of general knowledge and English language skills. It is worth passing these exams as soon as possible because waiting for results may take several weeks. Without them application is not complete and during holidays documents must be submitted to a university. Translation of a baccalaureate diploma to English can be delivered later.
